His debut poetry collection, Are you ready? Was a huge seller for Salmon Poetry (2009). His much anticipated follow-up A Single Mission will be in the shops before Christmas.
His writing has been described as “…gritty and irreverent, infected with copious amounts of tongue-in-cheek humour.” He “…shines the tell-tale torchlight of his killer wit into all the most embarrassing areas of contemporary Irish life. No-one is safe.” Apparently “Nothing escapes his wry wit, his derisive eye and his urge to shake things up to make the world a better place…” One critic said his work contained “…side-splitting humour.” One even asked if there was “any censorship left in this country?”
His poetry is a mix of political, satirical, ecclesiastical and rural and has been described as Paul Durcan meets The Sawdoctors. John is also a great performer of his work and has appeared at The Electric Picnic, The Munster Literary Festival and Force 12. His poetry has been broadcast on RTE Radio One’s Liveline and Playback, as well as on Mid West Radio, and local stations all over the country.
His short plays include Getting It Straight, The Customer, Fog, Invitation to Dance, The Interview, Special Training and The Visitor and he is the co-writer with Liam Horan, of The Pull. His radio plays include Postcard, Number Crunchers and Cool Together. He is one-half of HalfSolid Productions. He played the title role in the RTE Radio One Sunday Sport series, ‘Con Concannon – Emerging Manager’ in the summer of 2013.
He has an MA in Creative Writing from Lancaster University and is currently researching for a PhD.
