It is a warm night. Helen and Nina lie naked, arms and legs entwined.

“This feels nice. I have never slept like this before…I mean with a woman. Everything is so soft… whereas men are so rough, always wanting it…and then they go to sleep or light a ciggy”, whispers Helen to Nina.

Silence.

Nina pushes herself closer to Helen as if in answer.

Dogs begin to bark outside followed by shouts and screams.

“Oh god…what time is it?” asks Nina.

Helen reaches for her watch…”2”

“Today I have to go to the hospital and bring Cathy home, here…this is her third abortion…and she is just 22. Cheez…do you mind if she stays here for a while till she gets back on her feet?” asks Nina tentatively.

“Hahahaha…you are a funny girl…this is your home remember? I came here months ago…”

“Yes…Yes I know…but I like you around…and I know you will like Cathy…she is homely and always cleans up after everyone…”

The shouting subsidies and darkness beckons both girls to explore each other…fingers tracing the outlines of tenderness.

Morning brings with it the cry of a baby…yelling its lungs out…

Nina has already left for the hospital…while Helen stretches, yawns and smiles at the sun rays hitting the bed…I hope it’s is going to be a nice day she thinks to herself.

She quickly bathes, gets dressed, settles the house and goes out to buy groceries.

On the way back from the hospital Nina tells Cathy about Helen and that she will have to sleep on the sofa. But Cathy doesn’t answer for she is asleep, head on Nina’s lap..

“Tom” says Nina to the driver, “Can we go via the cleaners, need to pick up the laundry”

“Ok sweety”

They arrive home to the sound of Helen in the kitchen frying eggs and bacon.

“Welcome, welcome to our Shangri-La. We are born to please,” says Helen cheerfully…embracing Cathy.

“Come on we need to get your feet up…on the bed…”

Cathy follows Helen’s instructions…and lies down on the bed.

Nina holds Helen by the hand and gestures to the sofa.

“No Nina, she sleeps on the bed. I shall take the sofa.”

“Maybe we should both”, says Nina and giggles.

“Thank you for giving me shelter. I am tired and will sleep for a while…do you mind?” asks Cathy.

“Yes, we mind…you need to eat…I have made scrambled eggs on toast, bacon and some of that Italian coffee…come on to the table…”, says Helen.

The three girls sit around the small table and eat in silence.

And when the last toast had been shared they get up…Cathy to bed and Helen and Nina to clear the table and wash the dishes.

“Helen, I’ve got to go…Tom is waiting, he needs to talk…will be back in an hour…do you have any bookings today?”

“Yes, but I cancelled all for the next two days…thought I’d better be home and baby sit”, replies Helen.

“You’re a darling…hold the fort…” says Nina as she closes the door behind her.

Helen lights a ciggy and sits down at the table.

“Can I have a ciggy?” asks Cathy

“Sure…take this one I’ll light another for myself”

“I’ll come to the table”

“What’s your story Cathy? Want to talk?”

“Yes…yes…of course…my name actually is Catherine and I never knew my mother. My father brought me up and when I was sixteen he raped me…that’s the first time I got pregnant. I ran away…never told the cops…since then I live the same way you do except I keep falling in love with the men who come to me…I know it’s silly of me to think that these men will love someone like me…”

Cathy is a slim built with straight blonde hair down to her shoulders. Her clothes need like they could do with an iron. Her eyes are green and lips like suction pads…well formed and succulent. But her skin is pallid…which could do with some downtime in the sun….

“Do you think I will find love?” asks Cathy.

“Love…hahaha…sorry I just thought that funny…I have this regular customer who just before he comes keeps asking me if I love him…and then when it’s over he quickly dresses, leaves the money on the table and is gone…never even washing…seriously, love comes like a thief in the night…often we don’t recognise it and chase it away for fear of the unknown…you will find love if you stop looking for it…but when you find it what will you do?”

“Dunno” replies Cathy and takes a deep drag on her ciggy…”Dunno…maybe you are right…”

Silence.

They both have another cup of coffee. Cathy retires to bed and Helen lights a candle in front of Mother Mary’s picture and goes back to the table, sits down and pours herself another cup of coffee.

There is a knock on the door.

“Who dat?”

“It’s me”

Helen opens the door to Nina who is carrying a large brown paper bag filled with stuff.

“What’s this?”

“I told you Tom wanted a freebie…but he’s not like the other men…he bought me some nice wine, cheese and crackers…also a bottle of vodka…you know he has a beautiful wife and a two year old son…I understand what he is going through…he needs me…”

“Oh you are such a softy…come on let’s dig into the loot…”

“How is Cathy?”

“Cathy is fine…” replies Cathy from the bed.

“Ok girls time to party…” shouts Nina.

With honours done by Nina, the three girls raise their glasses

“Here’s to the trinity…us…the surrogate women of society that are born to serve…to life… and love…that is whenever it comes round the corner…till then…we live as best as we can…” says Nina.

The girls drink the wine, eat the cheese and crackers. There is a quietness, a kind of contentment that embraces them… these wonderful creatures…the trinity.
