The recent outburst by Burma’s Bin Laden of Buddhism, Buddhist monk U Wirathu, calling the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Myanmar Yanghee Lee a bitch and a whore has not taken many by surprise…lest of all the citizens of Burma.
The Buddhist monk was expressing his displeasure at Yanghee for speaking out about the plight of 1.3 million Rohingya Muslim minority in the country. They have been killed, beaten, homes burnt and thousands chased out of the country into neighbouring India and Bangladesh.
Nobel Laureate Aun San Suu Kyi’s deafening silence on the Rohingya Muslims is palpable.
No one in Burma dares criticise a Buddhist monk and gets away with it.
And to think Buddhism is a religion of peace.
As a friend announced the other day, ‘It’s not the religion but some followers of the religion that cause all the problems. Buddhism is a religion of peace’.
